I’m the person behind ‘Helen Mildmay Photography’

I’m a Devon girl, born and bred. After spending most of my adult life living and working in London and Cape Town, I moved back home 3 years ago with my husband and our 2 daughters (and a crazy dog). I feel so lucky to call this little corner of the South Hams my home and to be able to give my girls the same carefree outdoor childhood that I enjoyed.

I began my journey as a photographer 15 years ago working in fashion and product photography, but after having my kids my work has shifted to focusing on families and motherhood. Quite a change, but honestly I’ve never felt that my work mattered more than that it does now. Helping families capture those quiet moments of love and connection that as a mum I know are so fleeting, but mean the world. Making mothers feel beautiful and cherished and seen.

I’m all about the small moments between the big moments. The little curl at the nape of her neck, the way his tiny hand fits into yours, the look your partner gives you when the kids have done something unbelievably cute and you still can’t quite believe that the two of you created these unique and perfect little humans. These are the things that light me up, and say more about your family than any forced smile ever could.

My sessions are all about reflecting you in the most natural and authentic way possible. If that’s running down the beach and splashing in the waves, adventuring over Dartmoor or hanging out in your own garden, I want your session to feel fun, natural and easy. With two wild kids of my own I have plenty of experience with even the worst toddler tantrums (and most reluctant husbands!). I’ll gently guide you through every step, from what to wear to what to expect on the day, so that all you need to do is show up and be present with your family, I’ll handle the rest.
