Winter isn’t usually the season that comes to mind when you’re planning your family photoshoot, but I’m here to give you 5 reasons why it might just be the best time of your to capture some special memories with the people you love the most.

1.Fewer crowds, more space, more freedom – Our beautiful county of Devon can get busy in the summer, especially on the best beaches. In winter you often have them all to yourselves, and the moody grey skies and pale green dune grass make the most beautiful and striking backdrop.

2. It’s cosy knit season- I love a chunky knit, (a little too much if overflowing sweater drawer is anything to go by!). In your photos they add texture and interest without distracting too much from your beautiful faces and expressions. Also, is there anything cuter than tiny hands peeking out from a rolled up sweater cuff? It just emphasises how little they are right now and it gets me every time.

3. Hot chocolate on the beach, need I say more?- A run around in the fresh air, chasing the waves before curling up on a blanket together with a steaming cup of hot chocolate and a piece of cake. Snuggling up together to warm up and getting all the cuddles that busy kids usually won’t sit still for. These quieter moments are some of my favourite at a family photoshoot and they really serve to highlight your family’s closeness and connection.

4. Winter is a great time for an in-home photoshoot – Especially if you’re a homebody. Capture your family life just as it is, without even having to put your shoes on and venture out into the cold. Baking together and dancing round the kitchen to K-pop Demon hunters, or reading books together by the fire, this is the perfect season to capture authentic family moments in your own little space.

5. The sun is lower in the sky in winter – making the light softer, more diffused and just generally lovelier. If you’ve got young children but are dreaming of a sunset session this happens almost mid-afternoon at the moment, so you can all be home early in time for tea and a hot bath, what could be better?
